BERLIN GIRL
20-year anniversary edition

by Georg Guillemin
2020

Book Info
20-Year Anniversary Edition of
“Young Women in Berlin” (2001)

On the cusp of Y2K, Berlin still resembled a Cold War frontier town. Not yet a boomtown, it was a makeshift city of bleak prospects, a haven for the bohemian crowd, a frolicsome place of license and ambition. None of the girls gathered in the first edition of this book published in 2001 were models in the narrow sense. Many were not even native Berliners. But most took an interest in the arts, and the rough & tumble city was kind enough to let them.
So much has changed, Berlin has settled down, and the wild girls of the Zero Years have grown into women. Several have daughters now who are older than they were at the time. George Guillemin, too, has a family and acts more responsibly.
Gathered in this heavy luxurious retrospective are those of the originals that have stood the test of time. Others were dropped while fine images overlooked back then were added along with a slew of new faces captured since. Mrs. Guillemin has opted out lest the Guillemin children blush, but she is unruffled by the memory of the first edition because it has been out of print forever.

WHERE YOU BROUGHT ME

Stories, Odds & Ends
by Georg Guillemin
2017

Book Info
One night, storytelling got the storyteller what he wanted, when the listener liked the way he told his story and let him take her home, Scheherazade in reverse. It was not a saucy story, just a reminiscence, and it’s not in this book. Another time he wrote a spoof that was meant to parody the style of a writer he admired, and it made the writer laugh and ask him out for coffee. That piece is included, but it may not mean anything to you unless you read the other writer. And once, the storyteller promised a tale to a girl who had just been ditched, as a consolation of sorts, and she liked the gesture and the tale, but that was it. Some of the author’s early pieces are crude and crass and had better been left out perhaps, but a teacher friend of his likes them so much he reads them to his students after class. Many stay and laugh with him, and one of them even tried to get them published.

The thing is, none of the stories really happened. You could say that they’re made up. A person who didn’t know any better would think this cover blurb is trying to talk you out of reading them. But it’s not. Go on, read away. See what you make of this literary humbug.

MONOCHROME ROMANCE – The Lost Eizenhöfer Archives
by Georg Guillemin
Limited, numbered edition
2003

Book Info
MONOCHROME ROMANCE is the second volume of nudes by Berlin based photographer Georg Guillemin. It combines the hand tinted atmosphere of turn-of-the-century nudes with a mockumentary on the neglected artist Eizenhöfer in a combination of pictorial and text. The idea behind this tongue-in-cheek homage is to reconnect Y2K retro art with the buoyant aesthetics of the erotic daguerreotype.

BONE CAMERA
by George Guillemin
novel
2014

Book Info
Having pondered this momentous decision for five years, we finally jumped the gun and went for it: Let’s hear it for the first work of fine fiction by Edition Café de Nuit, a real novel, full of suspense, intrigue, murder, and black bugs on white background. A coming-of-age story that involves a love triangle and the romantic mayhem caused by the failure to distinguish between holding and beholding, always an issue in nude photography. So there is the link to our other books, and here is the plot:

A death in the family: One night, Nina’s mother Natalie, a photographer, dies in what seems to be an accident in their home in the Northern California foothills. In a retrospective that begins and ends with Natalie’s death, Nina chronicles the months that led up to this night, trying to assess her share of the blame. She tells how she runs into Nick, Natalie’s ex-boyfriend, and how for the best of reasons – planning to bring the two back together – she does the wrong thing, grilling Nick about his and Natalie’s breakup, and learning more than she can stand. Trying to quit seeing him, she realises she is in too deep. Going home to confess, she finds herself listening instead to Natalie’s own confession and is too shocked to tell her what she has came to say. That same night, Natalie dies, and when Nina concludes her retrospective with a second account of the incident, it is hardly the same story.

CARA Y CRUZ – Poems & Pictures
by Beate Brown, Georg Guillemin
Limited Christmas edition
2005

Book Info
Once upon a time, Beate Brown and Georg Guillemin both read American Literary History at the Free University Berlin. Riding the subway to and fro, they told tall tales of ancient lore and faraway shores as well as the odd shaggy-dog story. Their application for poetic licence is still pending but they decided to publish and perish anyway. The two cycles of poetry that make up this volume were written on opposite sides of the Pacific, one in California, the other in New Zealand. The photographs were taken in California and Germany, and are much less saucy than the gaudy revelry of, say, Monochrome Romance. Even Uncle Franklin wanted a copy, and—needless to say—we were happy to let him have one.

FREELANCE TRANSLATOR
Frontline Guidance
by George Guillemin
2019

Book Info
Rather than being a manual or style guide, this chapbook by a freelance translator discusses the psychological angles of manning the frontline of interlingual communication on your own. The book will dare you to ignore your teachers and their teachings. It will tempt you to consider what it would be like to work without a language lead and project manager. Encouraging you to craft creative translations your clients like and their clients understand, FREELANCE TRANSLATOR provides hands-on advice on how to survive in that no-man’s land of self-employment where common sense beats principles and where your best bet is to trust your senses.

“Guillemin’s account of what it actually feels like, on a day-to-day level, to earn a living in professional translation, is raw, intimate and honest, at times painfully so. It is also laugh-out-loud funny. At a historic moment when many of us are struggling to compete with the speed and rapidly improving quality of neural machine translation engines, this could so easily have turned into an elegy for a profession on the brink of economic obsolescence. Instead, Guillemin gives us a compelling argument for the added value human translators bring to the task: the craftsperson’s passionate desire to do something well for its own sake” (from the preface by Silke Lührmann, MA).
