Once upon a time, Beate Brown and Georg Guillemin both read American Literary History at the Free University Berlin. Riding the subway to and fro, they told tall tales of ancient lore and faraway shores as well as the odd shaggy-dog story. Their application for poetic licence is still pending but they decided to publish and perish anyway. The two cycles of poetry that make up this volume were written on opposite sides of the Pacific, one in California, the other in New Zealand. The photographs were taken in California and Germany, and are much less saucy than the gaudy revelry of, say, Monochrome Romance. Even Uncle Franklin wanted a copy, and—needless to say—we were happy to let him have one.

MONOCHROME ROMANCE is the second volume of nudes by Berlin based photographer Georg Guillemin. It combines the hand tinted atmosphere of turn-of-the-century nudes with a mockumentary on the neglected artist Eizenhöfer in a combination of pictorial and text. The idea behind this tongue-in-cheek homage is to reconnect Y2K retro art with the buoyant aesthetics of the erotic daguerreotype.

Postcard-size catalogue for the eponymous show at Refugium in Berlin, celebrating the aquatic pictures from Monochrome Romance (above). Yes, that was the show that didn’t sell a single picture. So, was it foresight that made us limit the print run for this hand-crafted gem to a mere 50 copies? Maybe, but there is no maybe about the fact that Water Romance has long gone out of print. The copies must be priceless now, and sometimes, late at night, we shed a quiet tear, wishing we had some of them back, what with the heart-rendering story the captions had to tell – oh well, What a Romance!
